How do I log in if I've forgotten my password (for both my username and the root) ?

Quite honestly, I don't think you can log in if you've forgotten all your passwords.  I would spend some time writing down all the possibilities of your passwords and then run through them one-by-one at the login.  However, if you're talking about the LIVE cd then the password is 'vector'.

Good luck

I did this once, on an Ubuntu box, and it worked:

Boot from a Live CD
Edit the file on the hard disk: etc/shadow
- for the first line (root), delete everything between the two first colons
Save the file
Reboot without the CD
Log in as root, blank password
Assign new passwords to all users

Of course, this is a risky procedure. No guarantees.

Get a live cd and boot it.
Mount the linux inxtallation's root to /mnt/hd
Open a terminal and execute
Code:
chroot /mnt/hd

Once you've done that, its simply a matter of calling passwd for each user account
