NOTE: as at VL5.8RC3.6 some of the information below is redundant as the login greeter has been changed . I will revise this HOWTO for VL5.8 at a later date. It does apply to VL5.1 Standard however:

The recent standard versions of VL use WDM, the WINGS Display Manager for the login "greeter", display manager and window manager starter. WDM is based on xdm with the addition of a graphical login screen, choices of window managers, ability to halt and reboot and ability to login remotely. This howto does not apply to the VL SOHO versions which use KDM.

Users might want to change the logo, wallpaper, animations, add extra window managers to the leftmost dropdown menu item or use an alternate greeter.

Most of the config files you will need to edit are located in /usr/X11R6/etc/wdm . The main config file for wdm is /usr/X11R6/etc/wdm/wdm-config.

1) to remove animations: comment out the last 6 lines of /usr/X11R6/etc/wdm/Xsetup_0

2) to change greeter wallpaper: find the line DisplayManager*wdmBg in the file wdm-config and change to the image you want.

3) to change greeter logo: find the line DisplayManager*wdmLogo in the file wdm-config and change to the image you want.

4) to change greeter font and/or size: in file /usr/X11R6/etc/wdm/Xresources change the appropriate lines. You must use standard X font descriptions. Use the command "xfontsel" for that.

5) to add alternate window managers to the wdm menu edit /usr/X11R6/etc/wdm/wdm-config and find the line DisplayManager*wdmWm  and add to it, each window manager name being separated by a colon, e.g.: "DisplayManager*wdmWm   xfce:openbox:fluxbox:icewm:default". You must then ensure that the file /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession has an appropriate entry for your window manager and you must then ensure there is an executable xinit.mywindowmanager file in the /etc/X11/xinit directory. There is an example file there for you to edit if you need to.

6) to use a display manager other than WDM (such as Slim) then please read this thread: http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum2/index.php?topic=683.15 . There is a Slim package in the vectorlinux-current/testing directory, but it apparently has some problems. You might have to hack it a bit yourself to get it to work. Be aware that both Slim and Qingy, although both lightweight, do not allow remote logins as WDM does.

re point 5: if you have an xinitrc.foo file, /sbin/buildsessions will get it automagically.
