Vector Linux 6.0 KDE-Classic Beta 2 is available for testing.

This one is for those who want KDE 3.5.10 on the VL6.0 platform.

KDE 3 needs no introduction. It is a mature and solid product with a large user base.

This release includes the expected KDE tools as well as the Koffice suite. Multimedia capabilities have been enhanced with the inclusion of VLC Media Player, Xine and the Mplayer application and plugin. For Internet usage, Firefox is included, with Java and Flash pre-installed. The Pidgin multi-protocol Instant Messenger is an optional install. Web cameras are supported. Wireless networking is easily configured using Wicd. Dial-up is handled by the Chestnut dialer. The KDE game collection provides entertainment for the young and the young at heart.

An installed system is easily managed and extended using the VASM Control Center and the Gslapt Package Manager.

I am running VL 5.9.1 SOHO w/KDE 3.5.10. If this KDE-Classic version also has KDE 3.5.10, then the only thing different is that it is VL 6.0 not 5.9 right? (ok, there are probably some different packages and stuff but still...). What exactly is better about 6.0? Is it faster? more secure?

With the official SOHO version going to KDE 4.X a project like this keeps KDE 3.X.X alive.  Sure it's on VL5.9. SOHO now, but that will no longer be supported by the community in a few years and what then KDE 3.X.X (classic) just disappears.
Not only does this keep KDE classic alive but it puts it on newer kernels, updated security patches and fresher more updated repositories. 

My question is are we planning to give this version a release announcement on Distrowatch?

The changes from B1 are mainly cosmetic. Some VL branding has been added. Only substantial change is that wicd is set to automatically connect to wired network.

Stretchedthin pretty much covered the rationale for this release. You get KDE 3.5.10 on a newer base, with support beyond what 5.9 will provide.

Distrowatch: We'll inform them of the final release. They decide if and where to mention it.
