Sorry, I am a complete Linux newbie.

Can any one recommend a really simple program that will copy my internal hard disk either directly onto an external hard disk attached via USB or create an image?

I have just put VL onto the small hard disk in my laptop to test it, and it works really well. So now I want to replace the HDD with a bigger one.

Thanks

#dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/dev/sda1 bs=32256

This assumes the internal hard drive partition is named /dev/sda1 and the external one is /dev/sda1. Change as appropriate. Note that the "of" partition must be at least as large as the "if" partition and also neither partition can be mounted, so this command is best done from a Live Linux CD.
