Hi All,
 When anyone has the time I need some help in setting up an HP psc 1350 printer. I,ve tried different methods and nothing seems to work. The printer works on another linux OS so that's not the problem. I installed hplip 3.9.2vl and that didn,t work either. So... I'm a bit stumped.

Try this...Downgrade to hplip 2.8.12

You should then have the ppd for your printer located here...
/usr/share/cups/model/HP/hp-psc_1300_series-hpijs.ppd

I imagine from there you can use cups or HP Device Manager to set-up.
If you choose HP Device Manager (under Accessories) it has an option to browse for your own ppd.  You can then select directly the ppd I mentioned above.

 Downgraded and when I searched for the ppd file The closest one listed was a hp-psc_950_series-hpijs.ppd. So i tried that using the HP device manager setup. Embarrassed Still no go!

 I found the hp-psc_1300_series-hpijs.ppd. tried to configure it and got a "Printer Queue setup failed" response. Now what ?

This should be the step by step using cups....

Start up Cups.  Via vasmCC --> Services -->CUPS Printing
Click 'Add Printer' fill in the Name (be careful of illegal characters and spaces.)  location and Description Field.
Select your printer from the device drop down list. Click Continue.
Click Browse at the end of the line that reads 'Or Provide a PPD File:'
Navigate to /usr/share/cups/model/HP/hp-psc_1300_series-hpijs.ppd  and select.
Click 'Modify Printer'
Enter into the resulting pop up window. User Name =  "root' (without the quotes) Password = whatever your root password is.

That should do it.  Print a test page to try it out.

Allright got to the drop down list part...it's asking for the device URI...now what?
 I'm going to enter - socket:// my IP address:9101

Print test page...NADA maybe wrong URI ?

Question.
How is this unit connected by usb or parallel cable?

Also make sure the unit is powered on or it will not be detected.

So if I understand you correctly when you are using CUPS via vasmCC at the screen where there is a drop down menu labeled "Device", you can not see a line in that drop down menu that describes your printer?

I still think Cups should at least see the connection to the printer.

I looked through your posted hp-check's.  They really don't look that much different than mine.
When you sign in to cups from vasmCC do you get directly in with "http://127.0.0.1:631/" or do you have to use "http://127.0.0.1:631/admin"

Thank you so mucho for your valuable time.

I added some more cups packages via gslapt... powered off/on; then when using Vasmcc & the cups configurator, the device magically appeared on USB.(It wasn't present as such the last time) Continued on with the configuration and successfully printed out my test page.

Added packages were pycups;system-config-printer;libgnomecups;foomatic-filters; and reinstalled cups.
also ran hp-plugin.
WHEW!! Finally!!

If I Recall Correctly, when I installed a non-HP printer on USB, it was a while before it showed up.  Perhaps there had been a reboot in the meantime.
