VL Light: no login screen after fresh install
« on: September 17, 2009, 01:03:21 am »
Dear all,

I've attempted to install VL Light 6.0 on yet another old laptop (Acer Travelmate 212TXV) in order to turn it into a packaging system. Installation worked fine, I chose ReiserFS for root partition and installed everything but the office apps, Opera and Firefox. If I remember correctly (am at work now without being able to access the machine) I chose "standard" for the console display option. I cannot remember if I have actually prompted to set up the X server configurations...

So after install I booted and everything went according to plan until usually it would show the login screen - Which part of the system is responsible for the login screen btw? Gnome/IceWM? - at which point it simply showed a blank screen. No keyboard input possible...

Might this be because xorg.conf isn't configured correctly? In this case I guess this thread provides a solution already... If you have any other ideas, please post them and I'll try them out tonight.

Promise to be more precise next time!
Thanks in advance!

EDIT: So if the blue login screen is actually the X GUI login screen, I take it that my problem is to do with xorg.conf configuration indeed. Will look into it tonight. Still, any other suggestions are welcome :)

Can you log to your VL in text mode?

Which part of the system is responsible for the login screen btw?

I believe the default VL6.0 Light install uses KDM. The other options are GDM and XDM.

Hm, just checked Wikipedia, and I think it is GDM that's used in my other VL Light 6.0 install.

So where would I look for a solution? Or would you recommend to just re-install again?

Boot to text mode. Log in as root. Run "vxconf" to configure X. Test it with "startx". If that works you should be good to go.

Thanks, everyone. So it is the same solution as in the other thread...
Sorry for wasting your time. Can't wait to try it out tonight!

Cheers
