[SOLVED] GRASS GIS
« on: September 30, 2009, 02:35:45 pm »

Has anyone installed the GRASS GIS program on Vector.  They have binaries for Debian, Mandriva, Ubuntu and OpenSuse.  They also have source code compilation instructions for similar and a "generic GNU?Linux binary but nothing for Slackware and Slackware-based distros.

slacky.eu has GRASS 6.2.3 for slackware 12.1 (VL6 is based on SW12.1) here: http://repository.slacky.eu/slackware-12.1/scientific/grass/6.2.3/
But with such a scientific package you should check the slack.required to ensure you have all dependencies installed (http://repository.slacky.eu/slackware-12.1/scientific/grass/6.2.3/src/slack-required)

Thanks for the reply.  Eeeek! it sounds complicated!  I'm starting to wish I'd installed Ubuntu but I just like Vector's speed too much.

These instructions will help you easily get GRASS installed on VL using slacky.eu repo.

First, enable the slacky.eu repository in Gslapt (about 4th from bottom) so dependencies will be checked automatically, and update your source lists.
Next, install GRASS (Gslapt may complain about an unmet dependency [python 2.5.2] but it should already be installed, just VL-specific rather than slack-specific)
Last, when you're done always make sure your Gslapt has only the 4 basic VL repos selected before exiting (packages, patches, extra, gsb).

That seems to work, however no menu item shows up. You can create one manually or just start 'grass62' from the teminal.

Many thanks for the help newt.  The install worked fine (though since I use VL 5.9, I used the slack 12.0 repository).  GRASS in now running.  Al  I have to do is find where the install has put the tutorial datasets.

Thanks again, I can't believe how easy it was.
