The GUI login screen (XFCE VL 5.8)
« on: October 16, 2009, 02:14:15 pm »

Hey

Do you know how to modify the GUI login screen?

My system is VL 5.8 running XFCE.

I am trying to find the scripts controlling the GUI login screen and how modify them. More precisely I would like, at least, to change the mouse pointer. Within XFCE is one thing but the login screen use the default mouse pointer. Most annoying!  ;)

I curious in general so if anyone have time to give some advice and tips about hacking it I would be very happy.

Thanks for any ideas!

most gui login managers use the pointer from X
you can set it up by changing the theme in ~/.icons/default/index.theme

Interesting but it lead to more questions.
First I need to make myself more clear. I talk about the login screen (the GUI one) before XFCE starts up. It this screen I want to modify.

Second how does you add your desired mouse pointer in the /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme file? Can't find any example of this. I thought this file was about the icons only.

download a theme and extract it to ~/.icons/
open the file ~/.icons/default/index.theme
mine says
Quote
[Icon Theme]
Inherits=Grounation

change the Inherits=Grounation line to Inherits=<YOURTHEMENAME>
and restart X

Ah, uelsk8s you are right, thanks!

I did change the /usr/share/icon/default/theme file. I want it to work even before someone is logged in. A detail of course but an important one for me. :)

Still curious about who is controlling the login screen. Have problem following the start up procedure. Not important but still, can be useful. Have tried to find info but most site only goes as far as to the rc.S and rc.M scrips. Can't help to feel that this is a bit of a wizard secret. ;)

Any wizard out there who would like too... ?

the login manager is started by rc.X
it can be kdm, gdm, or xdm
