Can't log in to new install!

Hi,

I can boot into my new Vector 6.0 Gold install on an old Dell laptop, but when I get to the login screen, I keep getting "incorrect login" errors with both my user account and the root account, using the values that I entered into the installer. The first time this happened, I tried reinstalling.... same results. 

Anybody got a clue what might be causing this? I saw another thread on this topic in which the poster found he was using the wrong kind of keyboard or keymap, but that doesn't make sense here because the user name seems to be entering correctly, and the caps lock key isn't on.

Thoughts??

Give this a shot:

-boot from CD to 'linux' (TUI) (type 'linux' at the boot prompt)
-exit to shell (last option when installer begins)
-mount your / partition somewhere (e.g. mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/target) (your partition may differ)
-chroot to your mounted / partition (e.g. chroot /mnt/target /bin/bash)
-edit /etc/shadow (e.g. nano /etc/shadow)
-remove any passwords that show up for root and your user (take note if they are hashed or plain text)
    -the password is the contents between the first and second colon
-save the file
-exit chroot environment
-reboot
-login with no password
-use vasm to set passwords for root and user
