actually that was his chauffeur. both perished shortly thereafter in a terrible driving wreck. the chauffeur inadvertently hit the accelerator pedal instead of the brake. most unfortunate.

It's hard to say exactly how climate change will impact different regions or how hard it will hit in general, but haven't we moved past the "it's not really happening; we're not responsible" stage by now?

Probably yes. But in my humble opinion, given the size of the risk (as big as our planet afaik), an absolutle truth shouldnt be necessary for deciding how to act. A nobel man would be more scared about doing the wrong thing than about losing money or time or whatever in greener practices.

does Al Gore in any way represent the community of climate scientists at large

I thought his documentary sucked, too ... where are we going with this?

I agree that things need to change. There are so many variables that can change
without true facts. This article shows that what was believed to be true was wrong:

http://www.theresilientearth.com/?q=content/conveyor-belt-model-broken

After reading that, then how many other models are wrong?

How can we blindly follow?

I know how you feel

the theory of relativity has shaken my conviction in the usefulness of Newtonian physics, for anything

like I don't even ride the bus anymore

We don't have to be climatologists to see the implications.

Think of it like programmers for a minute:

1. A closed system is a program.
2. The larger the system, the more rountines, the larger the code base
3. The Earth is a closed system (until a mambo asteroid whacks us Smiley).
4. The more variables added to a system, the more complex it becomes.
5. The more complex a program is, the greater the chance for introducing BUGS.

Simply said, by burning fuels, altering forests, adding chemicals, we have introduced more variables.

At the very least, Mankind has introduced BUGS into Mother Nature's system;
At the worst, we have totally Bjorked the System into long-term disfunction.

Perhaps in our Modern Industrial Hubris, we deserve our fate;
I can almost her Mother Nature calling, "Here little Asteroid, here!"
