I did a search first, and found this from lagagnon :

Anyways I assume you went to the Brother Linux website? http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/index.html
You need to read the instructions there, install the LPR driver first, go to the /usr/local/Brother/lpd directory and run the applications there (as root), then install the CUPS driver, do same as above, and then you simply set it up exactly as you would any other printer by going to the CUPS server with your browser (http://localhost:631).
I downloaded both the LPR drivers, and converted them to tgz, then I installed them by running 'installpkg' after which I can see
Code:
root:# ls /var/log/packages | grep 203
brhl2030lpr-2.0.1-1.i386
cupswrapperHL2030-2.0.1-1.i386

which I think means they are installed ok.
When I do the CUPs bit though, 2 things go wrong
1) CUPs tells me the driver is for a HL-2060
2) 'print test page' causes the printer to make a noise but thats all it does.

Of course, I missed out one of the steps above..

go to the /usr/local/Brother/lpd directory and run the applications there (as root),
which might explain the mess I'm now in  Undecided

When I go to that directory now, I can see

Code:
user:$ ls /usr/local/Brother/lpd
filterHL2030*  psconvert2*  rawtobr2*

If I try to execute any of these, they just hang.

Did you get the printer working?

I had problems setting up my Brother HL-2040 and made up a how-to
http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=1594.0

Basically, all you need before you start configuring CUPS is have the appropriate ppd in the /usr/share/ppd/Brother/ directory. In your case it would be the hl2030.ppd.

The trouble is that if you want to do that you have to download the rpms and mess around.
You've probably seen:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Brother_HL-2030
and
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-123539.html

For my sanity, once I got the printer working as i wanted, I kept a copy of the ppd. Now when I reinstall or update, I simply copy the ppd to /usr/share/ppd/Brother/ and run CUPS. That is pretty much step 2. of my how to. It works fine.
