Hello:
This is my first post. New to Vector Linux and new to Linux. I have installed VL5.9-Light-Final on an older machine W/ AMD K6-2 550 Mhz CPU 384 meg memory Tyan S1598 Motherboard
I want to install a Linksys WUSB54GS Wireless adaptor.
Followed the Introduction to Wireless Networking Guide. Got to: Open /etc/ifplug.d/ifplugd.conf command and could not open the file.
"cat /etc/modprobe.conf" command returned: Bus 2 Dev 2: ID 13b1:000e
Found module tg3
Added "alias wlan0" to modprobe.conf.
That's as far as I could get.
Where do I go from here?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Pls open a terminal/console as root and run below command and then post the output..... lspci lsusb lsmod PS: lspci and lsusb is to list out the hardware component that VL can detect and lsmod is to list out the currently running module (drivers) in your VL.

If you are trying to get a device working with ndiswrapper, please help ndiswrapper project wiki by contributing your findings. See HowToContribute My adapter is identified as WUSB54GS The info below " " corresponds to my adapter, when I follow the link to SourceForge for ndiswrapper. So it looks like I have to get usb8023.sys and rndismp.sys from a Windows XP / Vista 64bit installation and the latest SVN version (or 1.20+). I have Windows XP running on a 32 bit installation. How would I get the 64bit files mentioned? I still have the original installation disk for the adapter. "Linksys WUSB54GSv1 802.11b/g, USB 2.0 Chipset: Broadcom - BCM4320? ? usbid: 13b1:000e Info For 32bit versions, follow Linksys WUSB54GSv1 (see below. They should work) For 64bit versions: get the usb8023.sys and rndismp.sys from a Windows XP / Vista 64bit installation. Also make sure you have the latest SVN version (or 1.20+). If you use this in combination with the .inf file from the official drivers as found on the LinkSys Support-site, it all works (even WEP and WPA)."

I found this driver referenced for the Linksys WUSD54G adaptor: zd1211rw at: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Devices/USBIt didn't specifically list one for the Linksys WUSD54GS adaptor. I am assuming that I would be better off using this Linux driver so I tried to follow the Intro to Wireless Networking guide again w/ the above driver. I used: depmod -aq modprobe xxxxxxxxx to check the driver and then mcedit /etc/modprobe.conf to create a new alias w/ alias wlan0 xxxxxxxxx Then I tried to open /etc/ifplug.d/ifplugd.conf with mcedit /etc/ifplug.d/ifplugd.conf and i get an error stating "Cannot open file for reading /etc/ifplug.d/ifplugd.conf" w/ a Dismiss command option. I am assuming that I would be better off using this driver. Also, I found this driver update (WUSB54GS_20050428.exe) for the Linksys WUSD54GS adaptor, Product: WUSB54GS ver.1, Driver Version: 5.1.3538.0 (Win2000 and XP), Release Date: 04 / 28 / 05 at the Linksys website: http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/WUSB54GS/downloadI obtained the following driver, sys and inf files: RNDISMPK.sys RNDISMP.sys usb8023k.sys WUSB54GS.inf Thanks again for your help on this.

Well, glad you asked. What in your opinion would be best?
I'm basically a total Linux novice, in the process of learning the command language and how to use it and the basics of how to navigate the system. So, I'm stuck. I'm trying to figure out how to mount drives/partitions and navigate the file system.
For the driver instal; I haven't figured out how to tell if the driver I found is included in the VL-5.9 Light kernel and I'm stuck at the "mcedit /etc/ifplug.d/ifplugd.conf" command.
For the ndiswrapper method: I copied the Windows driver files to the Windows/Linux Fat32 swap drive, but I can't tell if it's mounted and I don't yet know how to navigate to it if it is.
I'm reading the manuals, but until I get through it all I need some pretty specific and detailed instructions.
Thanks for checking back.

I suggest you try the ndiswrapper method as it is much more easy. I notice you are using VL5.9-Light, VL6-Light is out..why don't you try it out?

Easiest and fastest way to see what drives are mounted is to type df -h at a terminal prompt. You'll get a list of currently mounted drives and human-readable information on how much free space is left on the drives. --GrannyGeek

hardrockgeo,
In a previous post you mentioned using zd1211rw drivers (Atheros chipset) and then following the Wireless Network guide. Based on your initial posting of the chipset (Broadcom), using the zd1211rw drivers would not work as they are for a different chipset.
My recollection is that the linux b43 drivers will not work for USB devices. Given that, I would recommend you attempt to get your device working using ndiswrapper. Go down that path and post if you need any help along the way. When working with ndiswrapper it is usually best to work with the XP drivers.
Regarding system mounted devices, grannygeek has provided a good way to view your system mounts. You can also issue the 'mount' command with no options and it will show you all mounted devices, where they're mounted, and their filesystem. If you want more in-depth help with mounting devices I would suggest starting a new topic to get more support from the community.
Let us know how it goes!

Thanks hata_ph, GrannyGeek and newt. I'm abandoning my attempt to install the Linksys WUSB54GS adaptor. After I installed VL6.0-Light-Final, thanks to newt, I discovered that it was causing the xterm window to freeze on the lsusb command. I switched to a Dell 1450 USB adaptor that worked in VL6.0-Light-Final w/ the lsusb command. However one last comment, the following output is from: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Devices/USB, for Linksys & Dell. Going by the USB Vendor and Product codes, the corresponding drivers are zd1211rw for my Linksys adaptor and p54usb for my Dell adaptor. You may well be correct on the Dell p54usb module, but I don't think your Linksys device is represented in the table of devices. Your device indicates "Bus 2 Device 2: ID 13b1:000e Linksys" and this device cannot be found in the table.
