I dont see anything wrong with the instructions you have posted.
if you want to build a new kernel version the easiest way to do it would be
1) download the source
wget http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.32.1.tar.bz2
2) extract it in the /usr/src dir
cd /usr/src
tar xvf linux-2.6.32.1.tar.bz2
cd linux-2.6.32.1
3) copy the VL-config file
cp /boot/config .config
4)run the make menuconfig command to change kernel options
make menuconfig
5)run make to compile kernel
make
6)run make modules to compile modules
make modules
6) install the modules
make modules_install
7) copy the kernel to /boot
cp .config /boot/config-2.6.32.1
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.1
cp System.map $PKG/kernel/boot/System.map-2.6.32.1
Cool add the kernel to your bootloader

Thank you uelsk8s.

I built linux-2.6.32.1 using the above, it showed 1 module error after "make modules", I "make install"ed anyways and all seems good!
Only thing is I had to remove gksu and libgku because it does'nt work with the latest kernels for me.( I posted earlier about this).

I presume, in future, I can edit the config to only include my hardware.
Is there a good resource for help? I have a 64 bit chip, but vector is 32bit.

Uel, Thanks for you kernel compiling instructions - they were recently very handy.  On a related note, what is the general method of packaging the newly compile kernel and modules into installable TLZ/TXZ packages for easy installation? Is this something that's easily accomplished (i.e. via slackbuild) or is it a manual effort since the kernel/modules are somewhat different than a standard application? Any description you can provide would be appreciated.
Cheers!
