Stupid virtualbox questions...
« on: December 02, 2009, 06:48:00 am »

Well I got virtualbox going on my new install, works great but I have a dumb question.

If I have a windows pc, can I just take that hard drive out of that pc, install it on my vector box and have virtualbox boot that installation of windows from the hard drive?

I wanted to check if this is possible before I rip the case open on my vector box. I just finished putting this pc back together and I'd rather not rip it open again if thats not something that will work...

Thanks for any thoughts...

I seriously doubt that will work.
Virtualbox works with ... you guessed it... "virtual" hardware... meaning 'emulated'.

I have 0 confidence that this type of operation will work.

Yes your absolutely right, I am confusing this with winuae I guess I'm used to copying why whole amiga os setup to wherever, its not a virtual hard drive file, its just a folder on my windows drive.

I just hoped I could skip setting up a whole new xp. I'm hunting around for my windows programs and things now. Actually, thats probably better because I want a total stripped down to the bones xp install for my vector machine. There is still a few apps I use that wine really dosn't like at all...

On a side note, I thought of some more stupid virtualbox questions... How do I get files from my windows xp virtualbox setup
to my vector linux host? In other words, If I have folders or files on my xp setup, can I copy them back and forth to the linux setup and if so how? I'm pretty sure this can be done, and I'd rather not just email myself files if they are big folders and such.

Thanks for everyone's help, new vector install going great. Vector is really my favorite, started with red-hat back in the day, never used it much, then suse, used a bit more, gentoo, ubuntu a bit more... Now I'm vectoring and barely using the windows box anymore. Feels like freedom to me... Nice.

Thanks guys,

Steven

Once you get your XP setup in a virtual environment, you want to install "Guest Additions" You can do this by booting your virtual SP and clicking on Devices -> "Install guest additions" from the VBOX window.

Once you get guest additions installed, it's just a matter of setting up shared folders in your virtual machine's settings.
I have only done this from a windows host to a linux guest, but I suppose the process is pretty much the same.
Basically, you setup the folder, and then go to your virtual OS and mount the folder to a local mount point.

I guess in windows, you'll get another icon under "my computer" or something
