No. Xfce has never supported that sort of system sound.

recently gave mandriva one 2010 xfce community edition a spin and they definitely had event sounds going strong. I kinda like them cause I've noticed they help me refocus when I get drifty during my pc sessions. This community spin is only like 10 days old, so xfce must have found a way in their latest offering.

I'm not using VL right now, so I may be a little off. If you have a file in your home directory ".xinitrc" you may be able to get sounds by adding a line such as

aplay /path/to/file.wav

near the top.

I stand corrected. I've just noticed that in the Xfce 4..6.1 that Zenwalk uses, there is an option to enable system sounds. I think it is new to the 4.6.x series of Xfce. However, having just upgraded to the 4.6.1  build for VL, it does not have that option, so maybe it has not been compiled in.

:( I'm not getting any system sounds in Zenwalk, even though I have checked the option (well, the two options) regarding system sounds in Settings > Appearance. Not sure what the problem there is...

You might ask whoever built the Xfce 4.6.1 version for VL about the sound option. I can't recall who did the build though....
