stupid hard drive...
« on: December 02, 2009, 12:38:39 pm »

Well today has been a very interesting day for me....

Not only did i lose 1 160GB hard drive (on the tower) I also lost the 80GB hard drive on the laptop.. and not only the wierdness of losing hard drives on 2 diferant computers.. they died within 10 minutes of each other.. (should i go buy a lotto ticket, i mean the odds of 2 hard drives failing within 10 mins of each other has to be pretty big odds)

so anyway, spent a part of the AM replacing the 160GB drive in the tower with my backup 160GB drive. and re installing VL KDE classic 6.

sadly the ol lappy is on the shelf as i do not have a extra 2.5in drive for it,

now for more ironic.. i just bought the backup 160gb drive last fri. for $5 off a friend

now the question is.... do i go buy me a lotto ticket for tonight? lol

I'd make sure the run of bad luck is over before taking any chances!   :-\

So both drives are definitely dead? No sign of life?

Bummer, dude!

were there any big storms in the area within a few days before the drives went belly up?

I still have the toasted innards of a PC on my wall as a trophy :-( of a near hitting BOLT

zzzztttttaaaatttt

(several months *later* several other machines went dead --- including drives at about the same time.)

Surge protectors don't work well receiving 100 Gazillion VoltAmps

Speaking of  'coast'

the fly-over thing is kind of weird ( ... no, I don't mean UFO's - but who knows, eh?  ;D )

Our office is on the coast and close to a big Navy base. The Shore Patrol helicopters fly along the beach line several times a day.
Every so often, one of them flys near or directly over our building.

Our office has a far number of electronic gizmos.  Now neither of these things would be worth mentioning - except that much of our building's lighting uses the old X-10 (home automation) protocol. (If you don't know about it, it's basically a really simple, serialized data stream that rides on the AC waveform.  You can turn lights on or off or dim from any location.)

X-10 is really cool actually.... until the Navy flys over.

The lights go on and off seemingly at random  8)

Took me a while to figure out why...

Anyone wanna take a guess ?  ;D
