I installed VL on a friend's computer. I have Vector running on mine , and everything works great. But when I did the set-up on mine, I had already removed Windows, ran lilo as the boot loader, and all went well. When I installed VL 6.0 light on my freind's Compaq, when it came time to install lilo, the options were either hda5 (what the first drive wound up as after expanding the hard drive to allow for three more partitions), or had1. The MBR was never given as an option.
I installed to hda5, and when it rebooted, only Windows was loaded. I repartitioned the HD to remove the prior VL installation, reloaded VL and chose hda1. Now when it boots, it sees Vector, and no Windows.
I came across the video guide at http://www.opensourcebistro.com/Tutorial/VL60/01.Installation/lilo/lilo.htm
but when I ran vlilocnf, it returned an error (unable to fish installing lilo)-although it did finally give the option to install lilo to the MBR, which is the option I used. My guess is it's seeing lilo in hda1, the Windows partition, and that's the reason I'm getting the error, but if that's the case, how do I unravel this mess and have the boot see both OS's?
I've got an XP disc, but while I'm tempted to run it just to overwrite the MBR and reset it so it will load Windows, and then see if it can load his existing Windows system from there, is there an easier, better, safer or simpler way?
