Many web sites especially corporate intranet sites are optimized for INTERNET EXPLORER and thus display improperly with other browsers. If you have to access a site like this, or if you develop web sites that will be accessed with IE you have to have IE available occasionally. In Linux this can be accomplished with IEs 4 Linux. It does however have a few installation bugs!
How to install IEs 4 Linux on Vector.
First off you have to be running Wine. Get it with GSLAPT or build your own package from source code available herehttp://www.winehq.org/
Next you need cabextract to expand the WINDOWS .cab files. The source is available here.http://www.kyz.uklinux.net/cabextract.php
Finally you will need a Microsoft License. This is not a System requirement but you are legally required to own a Microsoft OS of WIN95 or newer vintage to use any version of IE. It does not have to be installed you just legally have to own one.
Download ies4linux-2.0.5.tar.gz. herehttp://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Installation
Extract it by opening a terminal in the directory in which it resides and run
tar zxvf ies4linux-2.0.5.tar.gz
This will create a directory called ies4linux-2.0.5. Cd into that directory and run
Answer y/n to the prompts which are presented and allow the install to proceed.
The script will download a bunch of files from Microsoft.
Some problems may occur here. If it keeps restarting the download stop it. It will not complete (be careful, there are several downloads). You can either wait and try at a later time, or download the files manually with your browser.
At this point it is common to have cabextract errors with messages about extra bytes at the end of the file.
Since you already ran the install script once you should have a directory named /.ies4linux. You must not create this folder manually or what follows will not work (tried that).
OPTIONAL: If the script was unable to download the Microsoft files then;
Place these files in /.ies4linux/downloads (you can manually create this directory)
Place these files in /.ies4linux/downloads/ie6/EN-US (you can manually create this directory)
If your locale is other than EN-US place the proper language locale (e.g., "EN-US", "FR", etc.) here instead. If these files are not in the proper location ies4linux will attempt to download them again.
MANDATORY: Now copy all of the files from ies4linux-2.0.5 into .ies4linux.
It may download a few more files but all should progress properly from here.
Re running the ies4linux script from inside the .ies4linux folder is the simplest solution for a single regular user that does not introduce other problems. The only issue is the explorer bar size. It varies erratically, but all of the functionality is still there. It is a known problem with no solution as of yet.
Not many people will need this but if you have to have it, you will definitely appreciate it.
