The VectorLinux development crew is proud to announce the beta2 release of VL-6.0-SOHO. The SOHO project is VectorLinux for the small office or home office (thus SOHO) as such is larger than our other releases. The challenge is to keep SOHO as fast and as stable as the rest of the Vector family and we think we have met that challenge!
The SOHO beta2 release is based on the latest KDE-4.3.4 with many graphical and system enhancements. We have included all the productivity software one would need like Digikam, koffice-2.1, the gimp, k3b, scribus, OpenOffice and inkscape to name a few. The kernel is version 2.6.31.6 which adds new wireless network possibilities along with greater speed and stability. The GUI installer first introduced in the VL standard 6.0 release has seen futher refinements since our last beta release. Support has been added for a wider range of graphic chipsets and both lilo and grub bootloaders. Importing user accounts from previous installs is now possible provided a seperate home partition is used.
X.org has been upgraded to version 7.4 to expand the useable hardware base for SOHO.
We have included out of the box multimedia support so that all of the popular formats play without the need for searching for third party downloads to play a certain format. We also have the latest amarok 2.2 for your music appreciation.
The beta2 release has been heavily tested internally so we hope the transition cycle from beta2 to RC will be a short one. Please note this is now a two cd (iso) install. Installing the first CD will give a workable system, installing the second CD will provide all the bells and whistles. Please post any bugs and constructive comments to the forum section below:
