I have tried installing both 5.9 and 6.0 live to my 16gb usb thumb drive and every time I have recieved the error, cannot mount device.  I have tried it both with the thumb drive mounted and unmounted at start, and tried changing partitions.

Just a little clarification here... Do you want to be able to boot live from the usb stick or are you running from live already and want to install (non-live) to your usb stick?

In that case, what you need to do is extract the contents of the live iso to your usb stick and then run the liloinst.sh script which will be in the /boot directory on the usb stick (after you extract the iso to the usb stick.) Your usb stick should then be bootable.

You could use this tutorial.  Just make sure you are using a vllight live .iso to get a live version.
