HP Webcam refuse to work
« on: December 09, 2009, 12:33:36 pm »
Hi everybody!

I have a little problem with one webcam.

It's a HP webcam extracted from a dead laptop (DV6000). Like this thing have USB connection, i decided solder it a USB cable. And works on hasefroch XP. But refuses to do the same on my VL Light.
With "lsusb" give me this ID:

Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0408:030c Quanta Computer, Inc.

I Tried with cheese, wxcam, luvcview, skype, and all detect the hardware, but not have any image.

I have VL Light 6.0 Final. kernel

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Whats the output of running lsmod as root? We do have a driver in some kernels, but I dont remember if your kernel version includes the uvc drivers.
This driver seems to be the correct one for you:

Thanks for answer rbistolfi.

lsmod shows the uvcvideo module work, and is recognized by wxcam like HP webcam, but only i have is a green screen in this program.

I tried different configurations (/dev/video, /dev/video0, in VLC also, but no results)

When i run wxcam from a console show this:

Determining video4linux API version...
Using video4linux 2 API...
Determining pixel format...
pixel format: MJPEG
Found V4L2_PIX_FMT_MJPEG pixel format
Not a JPEG file: starts with 0xb0 0x73

and continue with the last sentence until i close the program. And in wxcam the screen is all green, The same thing happens in luvcview (the green screen).

I will try in another PC, installing VL Light first, and the standard later. And see what happens.

I like when this kind of problems appear, I can learn a lot.

Me again.

I don't know why, but the webcam starts to run (not 100% accurate, but it's showing images, great step).

That is what I did. First, install the uvc drivers, no changes.

Second, big changes. Update the kernel to, but still no results. Same "green screen".

Third, install LXDE (thanks to the "search" in the forum, i could find the solution to install it). And change to gdm to session manager. Reboot, and "voilá". Now have "some" images, but we are in the right path.

Strange, right?.

I will continue posting my results, in case it's useful to anyone.

And... sorry my poor english (my native language is spanish, i'm from Argentina).

I had a green screen problem with an older webcam.  I made this tut', it may help.

Odd that, switching to LXDE, had anything to do with it?

Thank you very much, stretchedthin !!!

Every answer always give a very important piece of info.

I'm not a permanent user of skype, but it's very useful your tutorial, and i save it in "paper" (writing the steps), if i need it soon.

The library libv4l-0.5.8 is the missing element for the webcam. I install it from gslapt, and it's working correctly now.

About LXDE, i like it. IceWM (i use VL light, in a very older Duron 800 MHz, 384 MB RAM DIMM PC133) is the default desktop environment. It's nice, light, and very customizable.
But LXDE it's in the same line. More functions and same consumption. It's more comfortable for me.

I'll try the webcam in Icewm and the old kernel this afternoon, and see what happens...
