Final stage and xorg.conf left me at the alter....Resolved

I had to do a couple of installs but finally it looked like all was going well..........

Then at the very last stage BAM......I get this error:

Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf
At least one Device Section is required
(EE) Problem parsing the config file
(EE) Error parsing the config file)
Fatal server error no screens found.

(ww) xf86Colse Console:KDSETMODE failed: Bad file descriptor
(ww) xf86Colse Console:VT_GETMODE failed: Bad file descriptor

Please help guys, the start up is just showing the big blue "V" start and hanging.

Can you select "tui" on startup?

If that gets you to command line, log in as root and run "vxconf". Test the configuration with "startx".

Thanks for the advice man, I got it to work and boot into VL-Standard.

I had to do a re-install (done about 5 so far) just selected the vesa config and it worked.

Now comes the hard part......getting my wireless PCMCIA card to work.

So far it aint working and then the system boot froze on loading fonts...........so I'm up to about re-install 7 now.

It's kind of a learning experience...........I'm hoping to get everying going well by reinstall number 10. 

Anyway, thank you very much for your kind assistance.

I am very impressed with the speed and the professional appearance of VL6.  It is much better than Puppy and Xubuntu IMHO.

Looks like your happily plugging away and enjoy the learning experience.
Here is a couple things that may help you out.

Some people have had improved installation results using the text installer, heres how...
How to...VL 6.0 std text install option.

You don't have to reinstall everytime to try different drivers for your video.
You simply need to launch into tui mode...
How to...4 different ways to launch into tui.
From there you can use vxconf to try the different video drivers...
How to configure xorg.conf with vxconf

Your PCMCIA card may have to be set up with ndiswrapper, this may be the case if it is not working right out of the box....
How to... ndiswrapper on VL

While the tut's help nothing beats the this forum.  You may find someone can give you some quick answers if you can supply a little more info.
To let us know what Network card you are using
try this command in the terminal as root. (Enter su and your root password.) and post the output.
lspci | grep Network

To let us know what graphics card you are using try this in the terminal again as root...
lspci | grep VGA

I'm typing this on VL6 Standard and it is great.

Those tutorial links helped me a lot.  Also the text installer is the way to go.

I really like this VL software, and the community is great too.

Well I did the ndsiwrapper driver installation and the pcmcia card did pick up the networks.  The only problem being that I couldn't get the wireless card to connect to the wireless router.

I'm wondering if anyone has advice on a pcmcia wireless LAN card or USB wireless device that is known to work (hopefully natively) with VectorLinux?

It is interesting to note that at the very end of the wireless network driver tutorial (and it is an awesome tutorial) the author says although he has got the wireless device to be recognized, he has never actually got the device to connect with ndsiwrapper.

Well guys more good new, or should I say totally awesome news.

I have a very inexpensive TP-Link TL-WN321G wireless USB device and it is literally 'plug and play' after installing it in VASM.

I didn't need to install any drivers or use ndsiwrapper. It just works straight up, totally cool.

I'm now fully pluged-in as you might say :cool:

Anyone that doesn't persist with this VectorLinux in getting it installed and running is making a mistake.  It is well worth the small time and effort.

Anyone who doesn't have a compatible wireless adaptor is making a big mistake not going out and buying a usb stick that will be 'plug and play' for $30.  The USB stick will be reusable on other computers too.  It's absolutely nothing compared to the level of enjoyment and satisfaction you will get when you get this O.S. running.

And you can take that to be the bank.....
