This is a strange one. On both my IBM X60s and my HP Mini 1000 the screen will randomly/intermittently black out and nothing that I do will bring it back. I have to do a hard power down via the power button and then power up from there.

Here is the xorg.conf from the X60s:

A wild guess, but maybe it's Xscreensaver?

My screensaver seems to work normally....move the mouse and my desktop is there.

This issue happens randomly/intermittently mid-task.....typing, going to a web page, etc.....the screen just blacks out and I can't get it back. Tried ctrl-alt-backspace and ctrl-alt-delete without success. It SEEMS like the rest of the hardware (HD, etc.) is working but I end up have to power down hard via the power button to be able to re-start either machine.

If it was just one laptop, I'd write it off to bad hardware. This is two completely different machines exhibiting the same issue. I am at a loss because I use vxconf regularly and nothing in the set-up of either machine was anything other than normal.

Alright, let's see then:

About how often do these freezes happen?

When did all this start? Did you upgrade any packages from the repository recently?

Did you happen to have any power surges recently?

Also are the LEDs on your keyboard blinking when this happens(is it a kernel panic)?

You can try powering up in the text mode and leaving your computer like that to see if the screen will go blank. This way we can see if it's X related.

Also could you run a memtest(Ubuntu has ons on it's install CD, and there is probably another way to do it to)?

Well, still just guessing, but hope it will help Wink

Alright, let's see then:

About how often do these freezes happen?

2 - 4 times/week.

When did all this start?

From the initial install. Even tried re-installing from scratch on my HP 1000.

Did you upgrade any packages from the repository recently?

Yes, I keep both machines updated.

Did you happen to have any power surges recently?

Not that impacted either of these machines.

Also are the LEDs on your keyboard blinking when this happens(is it a kernel panic)?

No.

You can try powering up in the text mode and leaving your computer like that to see if the screen will go blank. This way we can see if it's X related.

I will try this and report back.

Also could you run a memtest(Ubuntu has ons on it's install CD, and there is probably another way to do it to)?

Not familiar with running a memtest?

Well, still just guessing, but hope it will help Wink

I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. It doesn't happen enough to really get under my skin but would sure like to figure this out.

It's probably something that I screwed up during install but I have literally installed Vector hundreds of times as part of our Computers for Kids program and have not run into this issue. I thought that my HP was bad but when my new (used) X60s did the same thing, I was at a loss for an explanation.

Memtest checks if there are any problems with your RAM. I am not aware of a way to run it in vector. The way I do it is I have a Ubuntu install CD, and once I boot from it it gives an option to run a memtest. You'll need to leave your laptop running memtest overnight for it to produce any meaningful results. If by then it gives no errors, then your RAM is probably alright.

It doesn't seem like a RAM problem to me, just thought it's worth to make sure.

What it does look like is a video card related problem(given the screen going black and all).
It seems both of your laptops have an Intel GMA 950 video card.
I personally have no experience with intel graphics cards, but i think it's worth looking into it, as that could be the source of the problem.
I can see you're using "intel" graphics driver on this laptop. What about the other one?

Again, I am no expert, so it could be something totally different.

Not sure what is going on but both machines have been behaving lately.....

One more thing - it seems that the issue occurs when I am opening numerous Firefox tabs in rapid order.....I'll try to recreate the issue and see if I can narrow it down.

Thank you for your suggestions.....
