Since I wish to use my new 2GB for storage only: read and write; is there a way to permanently remove the U3 system files?   I have formatted the whole disk to FAT32, hoping that would remove the U3 System files.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would also like to learn how to change the permissions on the data files on the stick to Read/Write  from Read Only.

U3 System is on a separate partition on the usb stick that mounts itself as a cdrom.
I tried removing it with gparted but had no luck.
In the end i just stuck it into a windows mashine and used U3's own functions to remove the U3 partiton.

There is an U3 Uninstaller that you can download from the U3 site (at least it was there a while back). They had to make one due to the public outcry resulting from the "viral" U3 software, which installs itself without asking when you plug in one of the bloody things... Angry

EDIT: Of course, there is only a Windows app for this, AFAIK.

Thank you to all who answered.   What a great community!
Vector is simply a great distro and the community is certainly worthy of the word 'community.'
