vlc is a monster with a lot of dependencies from what I can see.

However, there is no harm in trying.  If you are using Vectorlinux 6.0 standard you can just right click on the .tgz file and select 'Install Package'

If you are running Vectorlinux light, then open a terminal and change to the same directory that the .tgz file is in....
cd /home/usr/directoryoftgz/
then run
installpkg vlc-1.03.tgz (or whatever it's name is)
The reason I say no harm in trying is that it can be easily undone.
In Vectorlinux std just right click and choose 'Remove Package'
In Vectorlinux light run this command in the terminal.
removepkg  vlc-1.03.tgz (or whatever it's name is)

I'd be interested in the download link if this works out for you.

Is there a lighter way of playing h.264?

While waiting for a reply, I extracted files and tried to run.  Looked like .93  and complaining my computer was too slow.  Gosh, I got the latest 233 Pentium I, released not six months ago, If my timeline is correct.  I think Bush will make a great President.
