Possibly, it's the ati radeon card. I use one and when configuring it with a driver, the safest bet is to use the vesa driver option.
I have two computers with ATI graphics. Both of them work fine with the xorg radeon driver but not the proprietary ATI driver. So I'd suggest trying either the xorg radeon driver or the xorg ati driver. I do get 3D with the xorg radeon driver. If neither xorg driver works, then go to vesa.
I should add that these ATI graphics are rather old. One is a Radeon 9200 card and the current proprietary driver does not support it. The other is a Radeon XPress 200 and is now four years old (gulp!). It's theoretically compatible with the proprietary ATI driver, but I'd have to build it myself because it doesn't work with the proprietary driver that comes with VL. It's not worth the bother to me, as the xorg radeon driver does everything I need.
