Author Topic: Removing the kernel source files  (Read 713 times)

Hi. I've recently installed Vector Standard 6.0. and, trying to save space, I'm thinking of deleting the kernel source files kernel-src which take up about 500MB on my hard drive and which I'm unlikely to compile a new kernel from.

What's the best way to go about it? I obviously don't want to delete any "live" kernel files in the process (been there, done that in the past Smiley ).

Thanks in advance,

CP .

Don't do it. Instead, let the system do it for you....

Try this from a root terminal:

cd /var/log/packages
removepkg kernel-sr

Then press the tab key so the system autocompletes the package name, and press the enter key.

That should safely remove the kernel source without upsetting anything else. You may have a problem if you need to do anything like compile video drivers later though...

Thanks, that was brilliant! 494 MB saved on my hard drive as a result and I've learnt something too (tabbing to complete file names).

Don't worry, I've no plans to compile any video drivers...

A quick update; using the same command, I've just saved 502 MB on my Vector 6.0 KDE Classic partition, so very nearly a gigabyte in total! Awesome.
