Well I tossed VL-KDE classic 6 on the laptop. big problem is its only giving me a max res of 1024x768 which just aint big enough for me. in xorg.conf it has modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" ect ect listed but it will not give me the option to set it to the 1280

any way to force this to the 1280x1024 res?

You probably need the fglrx or radeonhd driver. I have not tried this, but this page seems to be a good starting point:

Is the resolution of your laptop's LCD screen actually 1280x1024? Have you run it at that resolution on another distro?

It may be that the video system of your laptop won't do more than 1024x768 regardless of what you put in xorg.conf. LCD screens have a fixed resolution and often won't run at anything higher.

well this laptop at one time had win xp on it which did give me a 1280x1024 IIRC older kubuntu versions did give me the 1280x1024. i might try and find a older version and toss on there and see what happens
