Hello,

I don't have Open Office, because it's too heavy for my computer and it is being said that Abiword (which I haven't installed either) doesn't handle docx files. (I do my writing with Latex ->.RTF/PDF)
Antiword is a great tool for viewing MS .doc files if you're only interested in the text. Unfortunatly it doesn't work for .docx files. Googleling(?) the problem returned little useful results for a simple docx reader.

Is there actually a tool like Antiword for docx files?

In the mean time, doing some "apropos xml" pointed me to a program called 'xmllint'. This is what I did:

$ unzip document.docx /word/document.xml
$ xmllint ---html ---htmlout document.xml > document.html

And now I can view the file in Dillo. But this is crude.

There must be an easier and more elegant way. So is there? Or even better, is there a simple tool, like Antiword?

Regards,
Karenin

Latest version of Abiword has pretty good support for .docx files.

I tried to open a docx file earlier from the web with abiword and it said it couldn't read it but when I downloaded the file it opened just fine. I'm just using the latest abiword from the repositories.

Softmaker office 10 for linux now in beta testing (and, at least temporarily, free) claims to read docx files. (http://www.softmaker.com/)
