WoaS and BoaS

These aren't ever going to be packaged, and are not ever likely to be part of Vector, but both are very useful, so I thought they might be of interest to people here.

WoaS (Wiki on a Stick) is a personal Wiki, implemented in a single file. It can be used by anyone with a Javascript-enabled browser. It is entirely client-side (while you can put it online, changes made will not be saved other than to a local copy), but it provides a flexible method of creating documentation of various sorts. Pages within the Wiki can be encrypted, and the whole file can be made read-only (useful for passing out documentation which you don't want modified).

I've used it for quite a while, but recently development has restarted after a long hiatus. Lots of nice enhancements, as well as an improved appearance.

BoaS is an enhanced version of WoaS, aimed specifically at writers. It builds on the features already present in WoaS. It can be found here:

Thanks for the lead Paul, WoaS is exactly what I have been looking for (though not very hard!) for keeping all the little tips and tricks I've been collecting which are currently scattered around my hard drive. I'm presently half way through trasferring them all into WoaS and look forward to being able to find things quickly in future. The fact that I can carry it around on a flash drive is an added bonus.

I stumbled on it a couple of years ago. At the time, I was looking for something cross-platform that I could use to distribute some system related information. It was perfect. Since then, I've used it for all sorts of things.

I admin a number (currently 14) of SME server boxes for local small businesses. While SME is quite well documented, when I took over the job of putting the servers in, they were all running a bespoke OpenBSD system with no documentation. It was a nightmare trying to keep them going until I could migrate them to SME. I decided that I would not burden whoever may at some stage take over the job with something that was impossible to maintain. So now I document all the changes and customisation I do for those systems in WoaS and send read-only copies to the firms so they have a record of what has been done to their systems. The fact that all they need is a browser, and the fact that I can encrypt sensitive information, plus the fact that I can distribute the files without worrying about alterations (since converting a WoaS file back to editable is less than obvious) makes it an excellent choice.

I also use it extensively for notes for my own purposes - since its searchable, it makes the sometimes almost random notes I make much more accesible.

Glad you are finding it useful. If you have problems or would like to see new features, the forum (reachable from the WoaS web page) is quite active as well.

This is excellent, I have a folder of "Info" with a bunch of loose notes and stuff that I have now transferred into the easily accessed form of WoaS. I found that I had several other such things that WoaS is helpful for as well.
