Glad you are enjoying the beer in germany, but why don't you take a train to amsterdam, you can enjoy a much healthier relaxation aid there.

How about some shell tutorials, how to copy files, change directories make directories, make a zip file by command line, see running processes, memory, check hard drive space, is there a deltree equivelant in the shell? Show that...

Bascially, I'd like an all in one course on the shell. This is my big weakness and to be honest, I've been using dosbox for a few years instead of the shell. its fine for file management and moving stuff around but not so good for other things. The shell has huge power I am not able to use that much at present. I really want to dedicate some time these next few months to learn more.

Also, I'd like to see a tutorial on how to shut off unneeded services, processes and things to tweak performance
of your system, there seems to be not much info on vl as far as how to maximize your system performance.

Finally, I'd like to know how to change or customize the vector bootup splash screen, the text login screen and other stuff to customize my system a bit more...

Thanks for all the comments on Opensourcebistro.  Sorry there has not been any new content lately, it's just been a crazy few months for me. New baby, born in December, new demands at work, and as I write this I'm in Bonn, Germany of all places for a wedding.  I hope to get some new content up for 'bistro starting again in April.  If you have any content requests just PM me.

How about some shell tutorials

Beauty of the shell is that it is much the same across distros and variants. A quick web search will find numerous tutorials on how to use it. Like this one from the developers themselves: http://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/bashref.html

To ease into file management etc. using the command line, I highly recommend Midnight Commander. Enter "mc" in a terminal.

Stretchedthin's excellent tutorials are quite VL specific, which I think is great. It would be nice to keep it that way instead of duplicating a lot of existing information. Of course, stretchedthin should do whatever he wants. I'll have a German beer this weekend in recognition of his efforts.

Completely agree. I don't think there is any resource quite like OpenSourceBistro for any other distribution. And there are many, many sites for tutoring on command line UNIX/Linux -- and many books.

But this is all just basically looking things up. Copy is "cp" -- changing directories is "cd" (just like DOS) -- zip does so much it's just easier to "man zip" and read up on it -- running processes, use "top" -- memory check, use "free" or "free -m" -- hard disk space, use "df" or "df -h" -- deltree equivalent would be "rm -rf" (BUT BE VERY CAREFUL when using this command, especially in root, as it will delete subdirectories). All of these commands have man pages. I think most (if not all) also have info pages -- use "man free" or "info free" for example.

I agree with nightflier. You don't need video tutorials to learn to use the shell. Didn't we have a discussion on this forum a while ago where people listed their favorite shell commands? They all have man pages and of course if you google the command you can find a lot more information.

I'm not much of a shell user, but there are some commands I use regularly:

cd pathtoandnameofdirectoryyouwanttochangeto    -  change to the named directory
ps -e   -   show all running processes   (you can stop those you own; root can stop all of them)
df -h   -   show how large a mounted partition is, how much disk space is free,
               how much is used, and the mount point
ls   -   list the files in a directory
pwd   -   print name of present directory  ("print" means show it onscreen)
htop   -   bring up a text screen showing CPU usage, total memory available and
              how much is used, and processes and their owners
free   -   give memory information (how much is installed, how much used, and more)

Midnight Commander is a wonderful program. You always have access to a command line by doing Control-O, which toggles between the Midnight Commander screen and the terminal prompt.

I made an application to change the splash screen a while back. It lets you use a .jpg picture that you provide as the splash screen. It's in the repository and it's called BTC. (Bootsplash Theme Creator)
