It sounds like you are booting to init 2. In that case you only get the logout option. Try init (runlevel) 4.

You need to use "sudo shutdown -h now" for power down command, -r for reboot.

Thanks, I'll try it. Have to say though you're not likely to get people in a community centre situation doing that.

Understand. But following the same train of thought, you would want a public system to log in using a DM, not to the command line. In which case, there should be functioning logout/restart/shutdown entries on the menu.
