Single user mode - how?
« on: April 17, 2010, 08:18:41 pm »

Hi all,

I have an old IBM 380z laptop that I set up for my grandparents to use for simple word processing and browsing a few months ago. It worked fantastically at first, but after some initial use, they put the laptop away and did not use it for a while. As a result, they have now forgotten their login password.

Unfortunately, they are not at all computer literate. They also live about 4000Kms away, so hands on technical support is not an option  :(

I need to be able to step them through booting into single user mode, so that they can run 'passwd' to reset their credentials. Would someone with a VL 6.0 machine PLEASE be able to take just a couple of moments to boot into single user mode and briefly document the steps for me?

(Just for reference, the usual process is something like this: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-reset-forgotten-root-password/#lilo  However in the case of my grandparents, I really need to be able to explain to them the EXACT process for their VL laptop, as their level of knowledge is very, very low)

Thanks again all. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!,

TT
