SOHO-RC2.8 is up...............please test this. There are some important installer changes and many package updates. There is nothing dramatic between 2.0 and 2.8 but as we are closing in on final need the loyal testers to give this a run thru. Good news is we believe the uid issue is fixed as well as the cli keymap issue (please check /etc/rc.d/rc.keymap) if you tried something different than standard us map. I changed a few issues with the installer so hopefully if something crashes you get back to a command line instead of a reboot so maybe we can debug what happened. The package updates should bolster stability and speed. Please let me know your results. http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-6.0/iso-test/VL6.0-SOHO-RC2.8.isohttp://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-6.0/iso-test/VL6.0-SOHO-RC2.8-CD2.isoThanks all for testing once again.................. Cheers, Vec

I just wanted to say well done to the team, and thank you very much for this great system! I downloaded and installed VL6-SOHO RC-2 today May 8th. The Install worked perfectly. Graphics are great. Everything worked out of the box. It appears quite stable. As usual the applications I use are all working without any help from me. I can't be grateful enough for the amazing products the development team makes available for our use. VL6-SOHO RC-2 is a keeper. alextaylor Test Machine: Compaq Presario Desktop AMD Athlon 3500 Processor+2GB DDR2 SDRAM memory 150 ATA hard drive NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE Graphics.

No problems with installation and all the updates/customizations that I do. Still get KDE crash with gkrellm and presumably nvidia proprietary (or at least so it seemed due to the issue with rc2.0 not loading nvidia-latest). I've googled for a solution but as of yet have not found one. Thus I will try a different card (ATI based) and see if that keeps KDE happy. (I'm getting more like GG in that KDE is losing favor with me. I enjoyed 3.x.x but the 4.x.x series is more cumbersome to navigate for my preferences.)

Installed without a hitch. Going through my routine to get it customized to my liking.
Something I should have caught early on, and while it may be too late to incorporate it into the final release, it's something that I'd like to see in future releases.
I would prefer not to include my WIndows installation in the bootloader. Unfortunately, the ability to uncheck the option only exists with LILO. You can't tell GRUB to ignore it during the installation phase.
GRUB also didn't detect the VL 7 Flux install.
It still isn't taking the proprietary ATI driver. Is the version of x.org we're using dropping support for the older ATI cards as well?

retired1af I have no problems with xine, mplayer, or dragon player. I can't seem to get vlc to download with gslapt (http error reported). These worked "right out of the box." I wonder if it is an issue with your graphics adapter not having suitable drivers?

I honestly don't know at this point. In the earlier releases before the release candidates, I was able to use VLC, even though I was unable to install the proprietary ATI driver. I'll do some more digging, but the "insufficient resources" is most likely video driver related.

I just tried to load rc2.8 on my laptop and again get the xorg.conf error: http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=11690.msg74158#msg74158This time, as designed, instead of rebooting it dropped to the command line. While doing this something was checking usb ports scrolling messages: usb 1-1.1: new full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address x usb 1-1.1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice usb 1-1.1: USB disconnect, address x where x = 5-12. Anyway I looked at xorg.conf but found nothing that would seem to cause an error. I then tried running /sbin/setup but the installer wouldn't recognize the cd.

Please try the install on your laptop again when you get dropped to the command line check /var/log/x.org.log see if we can see whats going on. Can you use the standard NV driver with that card? when your at the cli also go to /etc/X11 and change xorg.conf.vesa and change it to xorg.conf then run startx see if that works any better for you. By the way mc is built in to make getting around easier at cli. I made a gkrellm package for you works good here no crashes with nvidia driver...................... http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/Uelsk8s/test/masta/gkrellm-2.3.4-i586-1vl60.txz Thanks for the help!!! cheers, vec

The first three lines of Xorg.0.log: _XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer: Unable to open socket for inet6 _XSERVTransOpen: transport open failed for inet6/vector:0 _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to open listener for inet6
Much of the file seems to be "routine" after that until the very end: (II) Primary Device is: PCI 00@00:12:0 (WW) NV: Ignoring unsupported device 0x10de0531 at 00@00:12:0 (EE) No devices detected.
Fatal server error: no screens found
The first three lines are similar to the first three lines of Xorg.2.log.old of my VL6 Std install on the same machine. The only difference is line 2 ends with ...inet6/(none):2 I made the change in xorg files as suggested which got a grey screen and mouse pointer but otherwise frozen keyboard and mouse requiring power off. I tried the gkrellm package and it kills KDE (or possibly just X) as it loads. I noticed that mc was there and was quite happy about that as my typing skills leave a lot to be desired.

I did some comparisons in some of the logs trying to get an idea as to why gkrellm causes the problems that it seems to cause in SOHO beta and RC. I came up with the following: /var/log/messages: May 8 12:53:06 asrock kernel: warning: `VirtualBox' uses 32-bit capabilities (legacy support in use) /var/log/syslog: 05/08/10 12:53:47 pm asrock kdm[3404] X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
/var/log/messages: May 8 23:22:21 asrock gconfd (mscott-13709): Exiting /var/log/syslog: 05/08/10 11:22:21 pm asrock kdm[3404] X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
/var/log/messages: May 8 23:23:18 asrock gconfd (mscott-15615): starting (version 2.22.0), pid 15615 user 'mscott' /var/log/messages: May 8 23:23:18 asrock gconfd (mscott-15615): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory" to a read-only configuration source at position 0 /var/log/messages: May 8 23:23:18 asrock gconfd (mscott-15615): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/home/mscott/.gconf" to a writable configuration source at position 1 /var/log/messages: May 8 23:23:18 asrock gconfd (mscott-15615): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" to a read-only configuration source at position 2 /var/log/messages: May 8 23:31:29 asrock gconfd (mscott-15615): Exiting /var/log/syslog: 05/08/10 11:23:00 pm asrock kdm[3404] X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
/var/log/messages: May 8 23:31:29 asrock gconfd (mscott-15615): Exiting /var/log/syslog: 05/08/10 11:31:29 pm asrock kdm[3404] X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
The first set (at 12:53) was using my compiled gkrellm 2.3.4. The last three sets came with the gkrellm that vector provided. I would like to see the errors posted in a console but I don't know how to do that since gkrellm requires X to be running.

After some research seems the standard nv driver does not do this chipset... umm, just finished the download, now starting to install. Read Mike Cindi's comment, above, re: problem with nvidea, so, I began testing with my nvidea based PIV ("D") computer, Behaviour very different from what I expected. As I write this, I am commencing the install on the older, PIII Trident based computer, and the video resolution is working fine, as is the rest of the install process, thus far, I am only about half way through.... Completely different with the nvidea video controller. There, the installer reported an error message, UNABLE to locate the installation medium.... how is that even possible: it is the same medium that booted up the computer!!! One small, and undoubtedly completely irrelevant point: The software, upon INITIAL start, gives a copyright date of 2007. I have seen more recent versions, dating from 2010. I am 99.9% sure that this date is absolutely irrelevant to other installer issues, but just for completeness, thought I should mention it. So, I am going to continue to try to finish the installation on the Trident computer, then the S3 Savage, and await further clarification, re: nvidea...... regards, CAI ENG

Sorry, same problem as with earlier versions, on the Trident based PIII:
I get to the final step, Create Users. I enter a single letter, T for Tux, for example, I also have a single letter password, I then get an error message telling me that "user T already exists" So, I click on the "back" icon, and try again, first with "TT", then with "TTT" each time, same error message, user TTT already exists...However, on the third attempt, VL SOHO issues a message, quite unhappy, I suppose, "Unable to successfully complete...Please run VASM...." Of course, that would be impossible, wouldn't it, I mean, one cannot log in as root, right, so one never gets to run VASM....
The problem remains, unchanged.... regards, CAI ENG
