I hate to ask a question that's been asked and answered before but, I cannot get skype to start up.  I downloaded the latest "static build" and when I click on the executable, nothing happens....Any ideas out there???

Thanks Deach

You may find errors if you start skype from the command line.

Open a console and type skype

Watch the console for any errors.

I have your version (2.1.0.81) running on my 6.0 system.  If I recall, when I was installing skype, I did a lot of downloading and stuff before learning of stretchedthin's video.  So I did my best to clean out all the old skype stuff before resorting to the video.  I think it worked right "out of the box" after I followed the video exactly.  Don't know why you are having trouble.  Only trouble I now have is that sometime the audio is not too clear (Perhaps because I have an old computer), but most of the time audio is very good.  Also, when ETM (Event and Task Manager) sounds an alert, Skype dies and has to be restarted.  Minor annoyances.

The only time I've experienced this error is when I tried to use the rpm package offered for skype.

I just downloaded and installed this static version skype_static-2.1.0.81.bz2. Opened it with mc
copied the entire skype_static-2.1.0.81 directory to my /home/user/. Made
a symlinc from /home/user/skype_static-2.1.0.81/skype to /home/user/bin/skype
and I am using it now. This is my standard installation of skype. Takes just a few minutes.
After the new skype is installed and running I delete the old /home/user/skype* directory.
Never had a problem that way.

Well,  I just downloaded skype on another computer (desktop running vl 6.0) and followed first stretchedthin's video and then pita's mc suggestion.  I can't get skype to take off.  Get the following error:

skype:  error while loading shared libraries: libWQtDBus.so.4: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory.

I am becoming sympathetic with Deach.  Perhaps we are both doing the same thing wrong.  I have the latest dbus and qt4 loaded from the repositories.

Did you try to create a symlink to libWQTDBus.so.x.y? Often the library is there just not the right name for the package in question.

Strange. I just checked there is no libWQtDBus.so.4 library in my box.
ldd ./skype does not mention it either that it is needed.
How about doing a ldconfig?
Are we talking about the static version?

Yes, its the static version.  I just downloaded it again and extracted with mc and then clicked on the skype icon. Nothing.  Did not move anything to home directory. Tried same from terminal and got same so.4 error message.

I just downloaded Skype into a fresh install of vl 6.0 I have running in Virtualbox.  One thing was new. The Skype site had me sign in before I could download.  Other than that everything worked just fine. I just started Skype up by double clicking on the exec file 'skype' with the small 's'
The name of the file I downloaded was skype_static-2.1.0.81.tar.bz2.  (Does this name match your download.) The Skype site shows Dynamic and Static right above one another.  They are actually two different files.  Even though they look like they may be related. The Dynamic file is not what I used in the tutorial.  Needs to be the static.

I have dbus 1.1.20,  and qt 3.3.8b-i486-2, installed on the system. I don't have qt4 installed at all.  However, on my main computer I have those same two packages installed and qt4 4.5.0_r948357-i586-1vl60, works fine there as well.

I did a search on both Vl 6.0's standards with  find / -name "*libWQTDBus*" and I have no such file.

I don't doubt you are having real troubles.  I just can't duplicate it at my end. Is it possible that a non-static package was installed and not completely removed before attempting the static package?
