I am new to Vector Linux and the Linux system.  I am trying to print with my HP Deskjet 940c printer.  I have this printer installed with Ubuntu and Puppy Linux but having trouble with Vector Linux.  I read the forum for how to have the pallarel port recognized so that is not the problem.  I have the printer on and I do have ink. Smiley  I ran hp-setup as root and here are the results:
root:# hp-setup

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.2)
Printer/Fax Setup Utility ver. 8.0

warning: No display found.
error: hp-setup requires GUI support (try running with --qt4). Also, try using interactive (-i) mode.

I do have installed CUPS, HPLIP, and Gutenprint.
I am so confused at this point because I don't know why my printer is not being recognized.  I am quite sure it is a simple problem but I am not an expert at figuring this out.  I am just a "point and click" person.  If someone could be so kind to help this newbie out it would be greatly appreciated.

I am no expert and I have know nothing about HP Deskjets, but I have several HP laser printers and I too have never been able to get Hp-setup to work.  No big deal, though.

Just go to applications>system>vector control center>service>services and then >set services>run level 4 (to make sure cups is running) and then back to services and then >cups printing.  Follow the directions and it should recognize your printer and install.

Did you try running cups?

I have DeskJet 1120C and cups did the trick.

Thank you sledgehammer your above directions  WORKED.  I am now an official VectorLinux LEARNER and user.
Thank you budulay - I did try running CUPS but it didn't work until I followed the advice of sledgehammer.
I hope this post can help other newbies set up their HP printers at least.  My printer problem is now RESOLVED! Grin
