Your hardware is pretty standard, normally it should "just work".
Booting from CD should not give any different result than booting to text mode off the hard drive.
Since you can boot to text mode, you have a great starting point.

When you run vxconf, does any combination of choices cause it to finish without errors?
Does it create a file /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

Using text mode install does give different results
as far as ability to install.

In the original post, slurt specifies VL Light. Text installer is the only option in Light.
