volume control
« on: June 05, 2010, 05:45:49 am »

Hello,

I use vector 6.0 Light and a Dell Inspiron laptop 1501.
My question is how I can change my volume. Normally I've fn-keys for that, but they don't work.
Maybe I could place an applet in my panel to change the volume, but I don't know how to do that.

Thanks

Greetings..

gslapt, obmixer

add to ~/.icewm/startup:
Code: [Select]
sleep 2
obmixer &

If obmixer isn't satisfactory on its own at first, make broad adjustments with alsamixer in a terminal.

I use obmixer and it works. I plan to map those fn keys to do the task. Can be done, but I haven't looked at how yet.

Dang. Figured you'd be the guinea pig. Ah, well. It's great to get feedback when something is solved. Many miss doing this. Thx.

I haven't even begun to learn xkb, so a hint is all I have to offer. I open a terminal and issue: xev

I press the appropriate keys for volume up and down. Here's what my machine returns:
Volume up:
KeyPress event, serial 33, synthetic NO, window 0x1e00001,
    root 0x41, subw 0x0, time 11284588, (390,-111), root:(393,583),
    state 0x0, keycode 176 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 33, synthetic NO, window 0x1e00001,
    root 0x41, subw 0x0, time 11284718, (390,-111), root:(393,583),
    state 0x0, keycode 176 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XFilterEvent returns: False

And volume down:
KeyPress event, serial 33, synthetic NO, window 0x1e00001,
    root 0x41, subw 0x0, time 11330512, (157,73), root:(160,767),
    state 0x0, keycode 174 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 33, synthetic NO, window 0x1e00001,
    root 0x41, subw 0x0, time 11330623, (157,73), root:(160,767),
    state 0x0, keycode 174 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XFilterEvent returns: False

Short version: here, it's 176 for up, 174 for down.
