Need Help Setting Up Webcam Software
« on: July 26, 2009, 12:25:46 pm »

Hi, vectorites,

I'm leaving the country this week and i want to be able to keep in contact with my family. Can someone help me set up a messaging program? I bought a webcam yesterday and i can see myself with the webcam application but that's as far as i get.

Oh, and i don't know anything about making phone calls with my computer either. Thanks.

Skype can use webcams I believe. It should be available through Gslapt.

I can't find Skype on gslapt.

I see that aMSN and Pidgin are installed but i have no idea how to set them up. And i don't know if they support video.

I have a Gmail account but its video chat feature does not support Linux.

Edit: Question: If i'm going to use aMSN do i have to sign up for a LiveMail account?

Skype was available through GSlapt in version 5.9.  You can still use the same build though, it is here.

I've made a screencast for this here...

There are other Skype related web casts and for another telephony program called Gizmo here...

Hope that is some help,

I've been using Skype for quite a while. Voice and video works very well.

I downloaded a generic package from the Skype home page. The "dynamic" version didn't work for me, but the "static-oss" one did. It picked up my webcam right away.

Thanks guys. I installed Skype with the video tutorial and opened an account. I can see myself in the webcam but i can't get the microphone to work. I tried alsamixer. I checked the microphone and it works, but. . . no sound. Playing music works, and the line out (headphone jack) works too.

Does your webcam have a built in microphone?  If it does you can select it from within skype.

To do this you click on the little skype S in the bottom left corner of the Skype window (make sure you are signed in first.  Select 'options' then select 'Sound Devices'.
Click 'Sound In' to see the drop down menu of what is detected.  If your webcam is the only usb device plugged in, it will be the only usb device detected.  Select it and then Select "Make a Test call' . If you are able to hear your own voice you are good to go.
