GNU Flash player, Gnash 0.8.8
« on: August 30, 2010, 03:05:59 am »

One for the repository?  Claims 100% YouTube Compatibility, builds fine on 64-bit Linux platforms,
compiles faster due to reduced internal dependencies.

Even though Adobe dropped support for opensource Unix/Linux 64-bit architecture with their proprietary Flash Player, Gnash bashes through to the rescue for the opensource community.

There is hope for the 64-bit VL-7 Soho.

Gnash for the repository, anyone?  Thanks!

In my experience (on Salix 64-bit) its 'comparability' claims are vastly overstated. Currently its not worth the bother.

Are you certain that that wasn't any of the previous versions, because the Salix 64-bit OS just release the Gnu Gnash 0.8.8 version in 8-23-10?

Quite sure. It works a bit better than it did, but levels of compatibility are still nothing like good enough to make it generally usable.

Thanks toothandnail, we'll just have to wait. Maybe keep an eye for the next release?

It would be nice. Apart from lack of 64-bit binaries, the Adobe Flash often causes more problems than its worth, even under <spit> Windows. Development of Gnash seems pretty quick at the moment, so it may become viable reasonably soon.

Because of the complications (i.e. excessive memory and cpu usage) of using flash and Opera together on my windows (work) system, I've gone as far as totally removing flash from my system. The plus side is that my browser works faster than it ever has; the down side is that I cannot view any flash content. Overall, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages for the time being. However, I would be willing to sub-par flash performance (i.e. gnash) than none at all, as long as my resource usage doesn't spike super high.

In other words, gnash with sub-par performance is still a lot better in my book than flash with ridiculous resource usage.... but that's just my preference. (now, if I could just get an up-to-date gnash for w32)

FWIW, I have been using http://tinyogg.com/ quite a bit and it works pretty great for me, though it is currently limited to youtube.

In addition, Youtube has some videos available in other formats if you enable html5 support in http://youtube.com/html5
It uses no flash, but the <video> tag instead. It doesnt work in all the browsers but well, looks like a good start.
