[SOLVED]No Int Connect
« on: August 27, 2010, 08:36:25 pm »

I had to get a new 2nd hand MOBO and cannot connect now to the Internet in my
VL6 box.

ifconfig eth0 up
gives following error: "Error while getting interface flags: no such device"

Now if I boot into VL7-alpha-2 I do have Internet connection.

Which files then should I copy over from VL7 to VL6 to get connction there again?

Thankful for answer!

There are two modules that can drive that card. There are times that
the wrong one gets used.

Check /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Output from lsmod may help.

I had to get yet another brand new second hand MOBO since the first one
did not seem to be compatible with my software. Yet still I cannot connect
anymore to the Internet in my VL6 box and get this error:

Try run modprobe 9138too or uli526x in your VL6...

It's 8139 ;). Well it will not insmod. Error: -1 Unknown symbol in module.

Now in VL7 this module is not loaded any more and trying to insmod I get
the same error.

Here I have the end of strace output from "ifconfig eth0 up" both for VL6 and VL7.

VL6
.../...
access("/proc/net/appletalk", R_OK)     = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
access("/proc/net/x25", R_OK)           = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
ioctl(4, SIOCGIFFLAGS, {ifr_name="eth0", ??}) = -1 ENODEV (No such device)
write(2, "eth0: ERROR while getting interf"..., 58eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
) = 58
exit_group(-1)                          = ?
Process 1154 detached

VL7
.../...
access("/proc/net/ipx", R_OK)           = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
access("/proc/net/appletalk", R_OK)     = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
access("/proc/net/x25", R_OK)           = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
open("/usr/share/locale/en_US/LC_MESSAGES/net-tools.mo", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
open("/usr/share/locale/en/LC_MESSAGES/net-tools.mo", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
ioctl(4, SIOCGIFFLAGS, {ifr_name="eth0",ifr_flags=IFF_UP|IFF_BROADCAST|IFF_MULTICAST}) = 0
ioctl(4, SIOCSIFFLAGS, 0xbff37f4c)      = 0
exit_group(0)                           = ?

So it looks that in VL6 ifr_name cannot find eth0.
What could have been broken in my VL6 box with this MOBO change?

I just finished about building my VL6 box after the HD failure I hope it can be
avoided that I have to do it again.

I made it! ;D ;D ;D

I was able to insert 8139too using modprobe instead of insmod, however,
still got the same error: no such device with eth0.

So I tried on a hunch "ifconfig eth1 up" and there was no error message. Changed in
rc.inet1 to eth1, then "rc.inet1 start" and I was finally again connected in my
wonderful, ultimate Linux VL6 box. What a relief. The day became suddenly
much brighter in spite of heavy cloud cover. ;)

Does anybody want to give a possible explanation, why now eth1 instead of eth0?
