Is there any way to install VL without it touching the MBR?

The MBR is never touched unless you select the MBR as the target for your bootloader.

Yes. For your bootloader, choose LILO (grub suggests it not be used this way, grub2 can't be). For where to install it, choose bootsector.

This assumes you know how you will load or point to the bootsector. Your question suggests that you do know this; if my guess is wrong, please post back and someone might look up a few extra pointers you'll need in that case.
