Gmail Voice And Video Chat For VL
« on: September 29, 2010, 02:47:41 pm »

Gmail voice and video chat has been released for Linux. But, only in .deb and .rpm packages. Can these be made to work with VL?

Yes they can.
Download the deb file.
Convert it to a tar.gz with....
/sbin/deb2targz gmailvoicefile.deb  (or whatever it is called.)

as root drag each of the files 'opt', 'usr' 'share' (names may differ") into /
Restart your browser.  You should be in business.

To make sure your microphone is selected... go to 'settings' on the top right of the gmail page.  Then sellect 'chat' also on the top bar.
There you will find a drop down menu to select your microphone.

I've done this already on VL7.0alpha2.1.  I have not tested it on any of the other flavours.

>> /sbin/deb2targz >>

That package isn't installed in VL6 SOHO Deluxe or in VL6 Light. Is it in the repos? I didn't find it there.

A few weeks ago I tried to convert a DEB to TGZ and I couldn't find anything to do it. I wound up using an RPM instead and converted it with rpm2tgz.

I'll check my SOHO machine when I get home.  In the meantime just try....
whereis deb2targz
in the terminal.

Aha! In VL6 Light deb2targz is in /sbin. Amazing that it didn't show up in my other searches. I see that it's also in SOHO in the /sbin directory. Thanks!

I always use rpm to install .rpm files.

command: rpm -i --nodeps file.rpm

Never gave me a problem. There is as well rpm2tgz in my box

Not perfectly on topic, but,  as a devoted skype user, and a big fan of google, I wonder: Skype in effect has video and voice chat.  So now apparently has gmail.  So is the big difference the phone number you can get with skype that allows you to call folks who are not signed up to skype?  And that allows them to call your skype number from a regular phone?   In short, I wonder if a skype user would be much advantaged by gmail's voice chat?

Unless the other person had an aversion to installing skype, I'm not sure what the difference would be.  There's an old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it".  My friends that want to chat with me understand I do not run windows therefore, skype is the answer.  Your opinions however may vary.
