Mount Android phone card with vl-hot
« on: October 26, 2010, 08:14:51 pm »

I just got an Android phone.
The phone card is recognized by Vector, but I am having trouble mounting it.
Actually I have to mount it before Vector recognizes it.

vl hot does not kick in unless I mount it manually. In fact even
Code: [Select]
fdisk -lshows nothing untill it is mounted.

If I want to mount it to my home directory I have to mount it twice
Code: [Select]
mount /dev/sda /home/main/Android
mount /dev/sda1 /home/main/Android
I also have to unmount it manually

If I
Code: [Select]
mount /dev/sdait complains
Code: [Select]
mount: can't find /dev/sda in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
But it mounts in the vl-hot directory and gives me working (mostly) vl-hot mount and unmount icons on the desktop.

Is there a way to get vl-hot to find and mount the card automaticaly like a usb key?

Are you plugging the phone in with the usb cord? if you are, the phone's notification panel should show an option to mount the card. When you do, it should send the computer (udev / vlhot) the signal that a new usb device is plugged in.

I've never used mine with vlhot, but that's pretty much what happens.

Yes the card is in the phone and I have to use the mount option on the phone before I can mount it manually.
Vl-hot does not see the card even with the phone "mount" card option selected.

This may be because it's not really a USB drive, USB drives emit a signal when they are connected to the computer, flash cards do not.

I think I know what the problem is.
The phone emits a signal when connected to usb. However, when you "mount" the card from the android notification panel, it doesn't really emit another signal.

Think of it as a usb card reader on vl-hot.
Since the signal has already been emmited, vl-hot never gets a chance to detect the thing.

Same goes with usb card readers. If you wan to mount them with vl-hot, you must put the card in the reader, and then plug the reader to usb. Unfortunately, this cannot be done with android, because as soon as it detects the USB connection has been interrupted, it restores the sdcard to an unmountable state (from outside the phone).

Bottom line, you can either use hal or mount it manually.

Mounting manually is not that big of a deal.
Thanks for the definitive answer. It will save me hours of trying to do something that can't be done.
