How to Install txz files in VL6?

Program xz found in gslapt should be installed

-- Download file *.txz

-- Open file as superuser (su) with 'mc'

-- Make a directory with file name (short only) on right or left panel in 'mc'.

-- Open that directory

-- Copy files from file.txz, usually directories, opened with 'mc' into that directory

-- Close that directory

-- Put cursor on this directory

-- Click F2 in 'mc'

-- Click on "Compress the current subdirector (tar.gz)"

-- Then follow instruction of 'mc' like giving a name to the file.
'mc' will put the extension tar.gz so no need to give.

-- When file *.tar.gz has been created move it to *.tgz.
   (mv file.tar.gz ./file.tgz)

-- install or upgrade file.tgz.

Note: on files whith new dependencies/libraries those are not
installed and therefore the new program might not work.

Why not upgrade pkgtools and then you can
use installpkg *.txz ?

bigpaws,

The latest pkgtools I see in the VL 6 repositories is pkgtools-tukaani 1.2.4.  Is that the updated version to which you refer?

Sledgehammer:

Yes that is the package I was referring to.

Pita:
It has worked for me. However that was on one install. I use it
on Slackware without problem.

I have used it in slackware-13.0 too, forgot the version. Then copied the files
into my working VL box. Then came xz. I will later check in slackware-13.1.

A similar trick to get this accomplished. This is usefull especially if you want to install the newer pkgtools(found on soho cd in packages directory) that is already in the .txz format.

Code:
# slapt-get --install xz
# xz -cd pkgtools-tukaani-1.2.5-i586-1vl60.txz | lzma > pkgtools-tukaani-1.2.5-i586-1vl60.tlz
# installpkg pkgtools-tukaani-1.2.5-i586-1vl60.tlz
After installing 1.2.5, you can now work with .txz packages just as easily as .tlz or .tgz!

EDIT: Or for converting a whole directory of txz try a for loop something like this
Code:
# for pkg in `ls *.txz | rev | cut -d '.' -f 2- | rev`; do xz -cd ${pkg}.txz | lzma > ${pkg}.tlz; done
