You really don't need a VL package to install a new version of Opera. Just download Opera for Linux from opera.com. I usually download the Slackware tar.gz package. Then in Midnight Commander find the file you downloaded, highlight it, and hit F2. Tell it to unpack the tar.gz. Switch to the directory that was created for the unpacked file. Then do Control-o to open a terminal from Midnight Commander, su to root, and run the Install script (./install). Accept the defaults. It will be installed in /usr/local. Exit back to user and hit Control-o to go back to Midnight Commander.

Start Opera as usual. If it doesn't start, go to a terminal and type
opera
at the prompt. You should get a message about why Opera is unhappy.

I've done this for years and it has always worked well.

Beginning with Opera 11, Opera's own installer works for Slack and VL. There're a couple of choices to make, but it's relatively easy. I haven't time now, but I'll dig up the details and post back if someone doesn't (please) beat me to it.

edit: OK, found the time and put the HOWTO here.

@GrannyGeek and Roarde

Many tanks, I appreciate your 'flash' replay.

I think that now arise a 'problem' on:
the 'old' version actually present in the 'new' VL7 [4.16]

Now who is responsible for maintenance of Vector repository?

Who is the 'good packager' that will provide an update (with my suggestion and appreciation)
before the next update?

Share nice idea!

I appreciate all 'effort of simplicity',
so please have patience and update faster.

Opera 11.1 is out

As I already asked,

http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=12808.msg79809#msg79809

why installing a new VL 7 with 'old' packages version and then taking care of an upgrade, instead of 'making' a more updated, amended, multilingual version packages and so create a more 'qualitative' version of VL7, from which, really "Getting started" and Jump?

(Repeated note)
Please Note: As example, Opera Packager: vl70@vector.Linux.vnet on 22-Jul-2010
(read the date? Is almost the same for many software.)

If there is a difference between (last) VL7 and the description inside
http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-7.0/testing/PACKAGES.TXT
or the files inside
http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-7.0/testing/
why don't update?

Now who is responsible for maintenance of Vector repository?

For this a suggest the creation of little groups of maintainers (packagers + testers) focused in 5 lib and 8 packages per group.

Who is the 'good packager' that will provide a fast update (with my suggestion and appreciation)
before another update?

Share nice idea!
