Author Topic: install grub after installing vector soho  (Read 1901 times)

I installed Vector SOHO and told the install not to install grub. My grub boot loader menu.lst is on another distro and I didn't want to mess it up.

If course, now I can't access the new vector install.

So, I was wondering how to install grub on the root partition of the new vector install. I didn't understand how to tell the install to put grub on the root partition of vector.
I can re-install if that would be simpler and if I miss-read the grub install options.

I have done some searching but haven't found what I need.

I don't have a floppy drive.

Can someone more knowledgeable point me in the right direction?

VL6 SOHO uses grub2. Grub2 does not recommend installing itself to root partitions therefore the option was left out during the installation phase. You can, however, install grub2 to the root partition manually (forcefully) once you've booted into VL. You should be able to use your install media (CD I presume) to boot into your newly installed VL system, and from there install grub2 to the root partition for chainloading.  Hope this helps

If you're talking about MBR vs partition installation of grub ... This option won't affect overwriting of your existing menu.lst. menu.lst is in relation to the distro's /boot partition.

If you already have grub installed from another distro, to the MBR, and already have a menu.lst that you don't want to lose ... Just add vector's kernel to that menu.lst.
