USB to serial converter question
« on: January 16, 2011, 02:17:59 pm »
I am considering buying an (M$ considers  outdated) computer that has no serial port(s).  I am wondering if a USB to serial converter (for the external modem) will work or if there would be a conflict between the USB and serial drivers.  Anyone have any experience with this?   Will the USB to serial converter work OK?

I've heard varying reports. You'd probably be more assured of success if you got a PCI-to-serial port PCI card, if you have a free PCI slot. They are not expensive.

It will depend on the chipset of the converter. Have any more info about the specific device you're looking into?

I have had very good results with a couple of FTDI based USB to serial converters for several years now.
