VC 6.0 Light - no CUPS service
« on: February 14, 2011, 03:10:32 pm »

Hi,

Trying to return back to an action the old laptop I've installed a VL 6.0 Light on it.

root:# cat /etc/vector-version
6.0 Light Final built on March 31, 2009

And now I want to add a virtual printer to be able to save a printing content to a PDF files.
While having all CUPS related packages installed with default setup, cupsd service is not listed on services page in Administration Center. I cannot easy uninstall caps package to re-install it as there are quite a few dependencies.

root:# slapt-get --search cups
cups-1.3.10-i486-1_slack12.1 [inst=yes]: CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System)
cups-pdf-2.5.0-i586-1vl60 [inst=yes]: cups-pdf (PDF printer)
foomatic-filters-3.0_20080211-i486-1 [inst=yes]: foomatic-filters (Universal print filter/RIP wrapper)
gutenprint-5.0.2-i486-1 [inst=no]: gutenprint (IJS printer driver for Ghostscript and CUPS)
gutenprint-5.2.4-i586-1vl60 [inst=yes]: gutenprint (JS printer driver for Ghostscript and CUPS)
libgnomecups-0.2.3-i586-2gsb [inst=no]: libgnomecups (CUPS GNOME library)
pycups-1.9.36-i586-2gsb [inst=no]: pycups (Python Bindings for CUPS Printing)
system-config-printer-0.9.90-i586-1gsb [inst=no]: system-config-printer (CUPS Configuration Utility)

Could somebody suggest how to solve this problem as I am quite new to VC.

Thank you.

VASM doesn't have this service listed and I couldn't figure out how to add this service to the list.

I tried to use WEBCAPS and it complaint cupsd was bot started, then it was trying to start this service and finally failed with error starting service and asking to look at VASM services list....

try run /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups restart in console as root

ls -l /etc/rc.d/init.d/sample

If cups is there, copy it to /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups, check permissions, then try it.

That worked! Many thanks for a quick solution.

Now I need to figure out how to add cups-pdf... but this may be another story  ::).

But problem is why the /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups was not there in the first place??

Installing cups-pdf is not easier then looking for missed cups service...  Any simple tricks like the one above with looking at sample directory?  ;)

cups-pdf should be located in the 'testing' 'extra' repo: http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=9601.0

Also, read GrannyGeeks post on her accomplishments of changing the output location of the PDF files - good advice there!

edit:
just checked and it's in the extra repo
