I think I have used nearly every Linux distro since 1998, but professionally have been a RH and Solaris man. On the desktop I've run RedHat, Mandrake, Slackware, Fedora, Ubuntu (and its children), Sun's Linux while it was around, and experimented with some others, and also FreeBSD, but I'd developed a real fondness for Debian in the last couple of years (and the JWM window manager in the last few weeks).

Imagine my disappointment when I put Debian Squeeze on this old work laptop and the wireless quit working. it worked just fine in Lenny...  Angry This being work and all, I had a limited amount of time to get my laptop back in one piece (more important things to do, you know), so I hit DistroWatch for something to install. I saw that Vector was Slackware-based and decided to give it a crack and downloaded VL6 Light.

In the last couple of weeks, I have come to like it quite a bit. For a stripped distro, VL Light still gives access to a package repository AND a ports collection, so what is missing can be easily added without all of the cruft of some other distros. The admin tools are neat, quick, and not bloated. The multimedia works. JWM+pcmanfm is a great combo, and icewm has long been a favorite of mine (if I happen to switch). It's a very nice package and I am very impressed.

I'd contribute a VL6 package of vpnc (the one package I couldn't find and built from the ports tree), but I think you want VL7 packages right about now.  Smiley

Thanks guys!

Hi Ben, welcome to our community. Glad to hear that VL is working for you.  Smiley

VL6 will be around and supported for quite some time, so additions to the repository are appreciated. New packagers are especially welcome.

Especially old guys like me, who are not about to switch to a beta, would appreciate additions to VL6.

Welcome!  I think you will find this forum to your liking.

Well, as compiled from the ports tree, it seems to have some issues with not having /sbin in the system path and with running vpnc-disconnect, so I'd rather make it work, remake the package, THEN submit it. Smiley
